Guess Where This is From...
Over the past week, I've been hosting a few guests from out of town. On a recent trip up to the North Shore we stopped in Wahiawa to pick up a few goodies. The first was this chocolate cream pie from Sunny Side Inc. in Wahiawa.
This pie is probably the bakeries most popular item. The crust is tender and ultra-flakey, while the filling is smooth and chocolatey.

After picking up our pie, we ended up at Dole Plantation, home of the Dole Whip with crushed pineapple topping.
Cool and sweet, this was a refreshing treat.

Reid,
Seeing that pie reminded me... You absolutely must try the Apple-Custard Pie at Deluxe Pastry Shop in "downtown" Kaneohe (45-1042 Kamehameha Hwy). And even better yet, call ahead to reserve a pie and ask them to add a layer of haupia (a dollar or two extra). I know it sounds kinda strange, but it's really good. I was given this tip by Danny Lopes, who wrote Moe Keale's "A Part Of Me, A Part Of You" (The Hospital Song).

Is that a chocolate haupia pie from Ted's bakery?

Oh my. That tart. Now I must go get myself some breakfast before I lick the screen.

Hi J,
Thank you! It was a delicious chocolate cream pie. It's one that I really love, but don't often have an opportunity to enjoy.
Hi Santos,
You're absolutely correct! I'm not sure if they serve Dole Whip anywhere else as I don't actively look for it. I always have to wait for my trips out to Wahiawa, which makes them all the better.
Mele Kalikimaka to you too!
Hi Clare,
There were yummy! Mmmm. =P
Hi babe_kl,
Same to you dear! =)
Hi Jo,
You said it. I love it!
Hi Melissa,
The holidays are always tasty, don't you think?
Mele Kalikimaka to you too!
Hi Kyle,
Thanks for the tip.
I'll be in Kaneohe next week sometime so I'll be sure to call ahead for the pie. Look for a report soon.
Hi Rae Ann,
Thanks for stopping by!
Close, but no cigar. The chocolate haupia pie has loads of whipped cream on top.
Nice guess though!
Hi Tara,
I take it you like chocolate. I do too (in pies at least)...that's why this is one of my favorites!
Hi Brian,
Welcome to the site.
It definitely is a chocolate cream pie from Sunny Side. It's one of my favorites!

Gah, Dole whip! That's my favorite "around the island trip" snack. I've always wanted to Sunny Side's pie, now I just need to find an excuse for going all the way to Wahiawa

I love Sunny Side pies. If only they weren't all the way in Wahiawa. Mmmm...

Hi Reid - the chocolate pie looks divine! Have a wonderful christmas and new year!

Hi Kathy,
I love Dole Whip too! I always have to get some when I visit the North Shore.
Sunny Side pies are delicious and if you haven't tried them before, you really should try them soon.
Happy Holidays!
Hi Marvo,
Yes, if they only weren't all the way in Wahiawa. *sigh*
I would have them more often because they are also so reasonably priced...much like how Ted's was back in the day.
Hi Keiko,
The chocolate pie is delicious. Not too sweet with just the right amount of chocolate flavor.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you too!

Both look delicious Reid! What's in the Dole whip - pineapple and cream?
Posted by: Cathy | December 26, 2005 at 04:05 AM
ooh, Sunnyside...love their pies.
really feeling homesick now...

Hi Cathy,
I'm not sure how they make the Dole Whip, but try to imagine a whipped version of a pineapple sherbet. That's kind of what the flavor is like. The texture is like a soft serve ice cream cone.
Hi Kat,
I love the pies at Sunnyside too. It's a shame that I don't get to visit their more often..their plate lunches are pretty good too.
