Eggs 'n Things

I spent most of last night trying to get caught up on some office work.  By the time I was done, I realized that it was past 10:30 pm and I still hadn't eaten dinner.  I wondered where I could go to eat...after all, the choices are pretty limited at that hour.  Then I thought about Eggs 'n Things.

OutsideENT

Located in Waikiki, this shop is definitely for night owls.  It's closed when most of us are awake, and open when we should be sleeping!  I along with a few others, apparently, felt like eating breakfast food in the middle of the night.

InsideENT

After I was seated, I was handed the menu BOARD.  Yes, the menu is plastered onto a wooden board!  I guess this is so you won't walk out with it.  On one side, the menu is in English, with the other being Japanese.

(The English side.)

After looking over the menu for about 15 minutes, I finally made up my mind to have the sour cream blueberry crepes Suzettes (US$8.00).

BlueberrySourCreamCrepes
(Sorry for the dark picture.)

The menu describes the Crepes Suzettes as "A gourmet's choice, delicate, thin pancakes rolled and filled with special fillings, sprinkled with powdered sugar."...and that's exactly how they arrived.

I got three of crepes filled with fresh blueberries and sour cream.  The crepe itself was light and fluffy with the edges being slightly crisp and crunchy.  The filling was the perfect compliment to the crepe...but the three of them, proved to be too much for me to finish.  I ended up taking one and a half home for breakfast the next morning.

This is how it looked after I warmed them in the oven.

While definitely not inexpensive, the meal was worth it.  The food was excellent and the portion was more than enough for me.   In fact, most of the people here last night were seen sharing one plate between them.

The only disappointing thing for me was the service.  Even though there was an abundance of empty tables, I still waited more than 5 minutes for someone to come over and seat me.  Once that was done, I had to wait about another 10 minutes for them to deliver a menu board (it wasn't given to me when I was seated).  After I had placed my order, the food took several minutes to arrive.  All in all, I was here for close to an hour!

Would I come here again?  For the food, absolutely.  For the service, probably not.  Although if you're a night owl, you would be hard pressed to find a meal as good as this as so late an hour.

Hi Reid,

First of, apologies. Haven\'t been here in a while. Doesnt help that we still can\'t log on to typepad so this is going thru a proxy.

This comment covers all previous posts as well purely for my convenience. The photos are all awesome, especially the dynamite roll and the massive plate lunch.

I skipped lunch today and now going thru your blog, I can hear my stomach growling!! Damn ... everything looks so delicious!! :o)

Hi Reid! Your breakfast looks delicious. It's been many years since I've done it - but I love eating a late-night breakfast!

!! i haven't been here in ages, i'm glad it's still around (wasn't there a fire...?).

reminds me of late nights after the wave and what was that place...anna bannanas!

Those are some crazy hours! All your posts make me want to visit Hawaii.

Oh my i can finally make a comment.Reid, you mind achiving ur entries weekly instead of monthly?I've tried posting comments hundreds of times but always ended up getting hung. Thanks:)

Hey FatMan,

No need to apologize. I understand completely. Thanks for the compliment on the pictures, but you know, my subjects looked good and were cooperative. That helps! It also helps that they tasted very good afterward!

By the way, I've learned to read blogs late at night after dinner so that I won't get hunger pangs. The food you've been posting lately looks great as well!

Hi Cathy,

I normally don't indulge in crepes Suzettes or pancakes late at night because of the high carbohydrates and sugar, but this was a craving that I needed to have satisfied! I just discovered that blueberries and sour cream go well together.

Hi Santos,

Yes, this place is still around. There was a fire back in 2001, but the shop renovated and reopened in under a year's time.

I still remember the "old" Eggs 'n Things shop which was around the corner (they had 6 tables then, if I remember correctly). It was either this, Wailana or Sizzlers after a late night.

Hi Mariko,

Thanks for stopping by again. Yes, the hours here are a bit crazy. You could come during the day, but be prepared to wait at least 30 minutes to an hour for a table.

You should come to Hawaii. It makes a nice vacation. Besides, you can go to the beach, get some sun and some of our local eats.

Hi Min,

Nice to see you. Didn't know you were having trouble posting to the blog. I'll think about archiving my posts on either a weekly or bi-weekly basis going forward. Thanks for the tip!

Reid - I have a stupid, pragmatic question for you. Where do you park when you go to Eggs 'n Things? I think I must be looking in all the wrong places because I can't seem to find anything within blocks.

[I found you through Food Porn.]

Hi Alan,

Thanks for stopping by. The question is not stupid at all. I believe the parking for Eggs 'n Things is at the hotel (Waikiki Grand) across the street next to Jack in The Box. Since I normally go walking in Waikiki prior to eating at Eggs 'n Things, I normally park blocks away as well (King Kalakaua Plaza, Niketown).

It was good reading your review about Egg 'n Things. I used to go there with friends during our university days. It brought back lots of good memories.

Hi PaulJ,

Welcome and thanks for stopping by!

I'm glad this brought back memories for you. Did you get to visit Eggs 'N Things when it was at the old location near Ena Road? The shop was so small then and there used to be a line out the door at 4am.

*sigh* Memories...

Thanks for stopping by!

Most of the newer photos on this site are being taken by this camera. I'm still learning how to use it, but I think the photos it takes are amazing. Though the lens I use often varies, many of the photos on this site are taken with a Canon EF 35mm f2.0 lens.

A majority of the photos on this site were shot using this little camera. It was compact and discreet -- excellent for taking photos under most conditions. Sadly, it has recently died.
